At the Waterfront, After Dark

At the waterfront, the town becomes a field of distant lights. Points of white, yellow and blue appear beyond the dark water. In front of that view, a man steps into the frame and gestures toward the night around him.

The two portraits catch different parts of the same encounter. In one photograph he points beyond the edge of the frame; in the other he faces the camera with both hands raised. That movement brings energy to the scene, while the lights behind him keep the waterfront present without taking attention away from the person.

Many photographs of Mykonos at night focus only on the view across the water. These frames include someone within it. For a moment, the familiar lights become the setting for an encounter that could only have happened on this walk.
