Delos Open Museum Phase B gains €1.2m in funding
The South Aegean Region says it has raised Phase B funding to €5.53m. The announcement describes revised project costs, but does not document completed work.
Funding amendment announced 19 October · completion not established
What changed
The South Aegean Region says it has signed an amendment increasing the budget of “Delos – Open Museum”, Phase B, by €1.2 million. Its 19 October announcement puts the revised total at €5,525,714.22, up from €4,325,714.22. The project is part of the South Aegean 2021–2027 regional programme, co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund, with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades as beneficiary.
This is a change to the funding of an already included project. It is not an announcement that the museum has reopened, that the works are complete or that every planned intervention has been contracted.
What the money is meant to support
The Region attributes the amendment to updated costs for the project’s components, some reorganisation of interventions and an adjusted implementation timetable. It describes conservation and presentation work at the Temple of Apollo, the Sanctuary, the Granite Palaestra and the House of the Diadoumenos, as well as visitor routes, signs and upgrades at the archaeological museum. It also lists eleven worksite accommodation units with a combined capacity of 22 beds to support staff working on Delos.
The public announcement does not provide a new item-by-item budget or say how much of the additional €1.2 million goes to each component. Without the underlying amendment and procurement records, those allocations and the stage reached by individual works remain unverified.
The date needs context
The Region gives 30 June 2028 as the project completion date. Its managing authority’s original Phase B inclusion notice, published on 3 April 2024, gave the same date. The October announcement refers to an adjusted timetable, but these two public notices alone do not establish that the overall end date was extended. A completion date in a funding programme is a plan, not evidence that construction will finish on that day.
The 2024 notice already listed restoration at the main monuments, visitor routes, museum repairs and interpretation. The new announcement therefore should not be read as the first approval of all those works. Its clear new fact is the €1.2 million increase in the overall budget.
What visitors and residents can watch next
For people concerned about the condition and accessibility of Delos, the useful next evidence is the signed amendment with its detailed component budget, followed by contract and progress records. Those would show which interventions receive the added funding and what has actually been delivered. The financial announcement alone does not change the published visiting hours or establish access to renovated museum spaces.
Mykonos Illustrated checked the Region’s announcement and the original managing-authority notice on 22 October. We have not obtained the signed amendment itself and cannot independently verify a revised breakdown or physical completion. We will update this report when those records are available.
