Mykonos in a six-island funding call
On 12 October, the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced a €6.4 million funding call for restoring disused uncontrolled waste-disposal sites on six islands, including Mykonos. It names the municipalities as beneficiaries and says environmental authorisation has been obtained. The amount covers the whole call, not Mykonos alone.
A closed site still needs restoration
Stopping the use of a disposal site and completing its restoration are separate milestones. For readers trying to understand the local consequence, a headline about “closure” is therefore insufficient: the relevant question is what work will be undertaken and when it will be delivered.
This announcement does not provide a Mykonos-specific allocation, a named contractor or a completion date. It cannot establish that work has started, that funds have been disbursed or that restoration is complete.
The next records that matter
A useful follow-up should connect the funding announcement to the island’s own project documents: its approved scope and budget, procurement and contract records, and eventually evidence of completion. Those are the milestones against which progress can be assessed.
The present report concerns the ministry’s announcement. It is not an inspection of the site or an assessment of current environmental conditions. We will retain this distinction when reporting any subsequent project decision.
