Mykonos committee approves October lifeguard extension

A municipal decision covers 1–31 October at the island’s designated busy beaches and approves a €109,676.45 pre-VAT contract increase. The signed amendment and actual October service remain to be verified.

What was approved

Mykonos Municipal Committee voted on 22 September to extend lifeguard coverage at the island’s designated busy beaches from 1 through 31 October 2026. Decision 229/2026 approves an additional 31 days under the existing contract with Kataskevastiki Navagosostiki, trading as Bayline Services–Lifeguard Academy of Greece. The increase is €109,676.45 before VAT, or €135,998.79 including 24% VAT.

This is a committee approval of a contract amendment, not evidence that October shifts have already been delivered. The mayor was authorised to take the further legal steps. The signed amendment and implementation should be checked separately.

Why an extra month was proposed

The municipal technical service cited continuing visitor and hotel activity in October and the risk of a gap in beach safety. The decision records that the Mykonos Port Authority supported coverage through 31 October and that the contractor accepted the requested extension. Those documents informed the proposal; the committee decision is the stage now confirmed.

The text describes the covered locations as the designated busy beaches. It does not provide a beach-by-beach October duty roster, daily hours or an assurance that every beach has a lifeguard. Visitors should therefore check the posted arrangements at the particular beach rather than infer coverage everywhere on the island.

A contested cost and the next check

The approval passed by majority. The minutes record two votes against; councillor Konstantinos Koukas questioned both the period and the amount and argued that a ministry decision was needed rather than only the Port Authority’s opinion. The published record does not settle that legal disagreement, and our report makes no independent legal finding.
