Rubio in Athens: A Chronicle of the Visit
The Strategic Dialogue, the Pnyx address and the meeting at Maximos Mansion
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Athens on October 7 for the sixth Greece–US Strategic Dialogue. His programme included talks with Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, an address at the Pnyx and a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion.
The working day began at the Foreign Ministry, where the two ministers opened the sixth Strategic Dialogue. Their joint statement records a Letter of Intent on cooperation between the Hellenic Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard, an extension of the agreement protecting archaeological and ethnological material, and a memorandum on mutual recognition of seafarers' certificates of competency. The talks also covered defence, energy and security.
Gerapetritis pointed to the Vertical Corridor as a route for US LNG to reach Europe. Rubio linked diversified energy routes to security of supply. The joint statement also provides for stronger counterterrorism cooperation. On the sidelines of the Dialogue, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff and the commander of the Florida National Guard signed the Letter of Intent in the presence of Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Rubio.
That afternoon Rubio spoke at the Pnyx, with President Konstantinos Tasoulas in attendance. He chose a historic setting to discuss the relationship between the United States and Europe, connecting Athens to the political inheritance of the West. The setting gave the visit a symbolic dimension beyond the Dialogue's practical outcomes.
The day closed at Maximos Mansion, where Mitsotakis congratulated the US Secretary of State on an “extremely impressive” speech. The prime minister stressed that cooperation between the two countries extends beyond security to energy. Rubio thanked him for the opportunity to speak at the Pnyx.
